4 Reasons you should test prep over the summer

Summer break is in full swing! By now, you have probably checked off a few things from your summer “to-do list”:

  • Lounge by the pool
  • Hang out with friends
  • Play a “few” hours of video games

As the temperature rises and your summer “to-do list” becomes smaller, you may be wondering what to do next?

One thing you may want to consider doing over the next few weeks of summer is taking the time to get ahead of the game when it comes to the SAT or ACT test prep. With your summer check-list dwindling, it is an excellent opportunity to prepare for these exams at a much more relaxed pace where you can really focus on content and the steps necessary for success.

Reason #1: Learning the test doesn’t have to compete with classwork

Summer is a great time to test prep for the SAT/ACT because your study plan doesn’t have to compete with classwork. You have three solid months to better understand the exam and what is needed to be successful and you can do it all while not worrying about your high school course load.

You have the ability to:

  • Work through practice tests  at a relaxed pace
  • Review content you find confusing
  • Get familiar with the time restrictions for the exam
  • Learn tricks and tips that make the exam easier

Reason #2: Freedom to learn at a slower/ relaxed pace

Let’s face it, the SAT/ACT is a pretty big deal and your score on the exam(s) is a critical piece of the college application process. During the summer, you have the freedom to work at a much more relaxed and slower pace. You have more time to dig deeper into the content and better understand your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the exam.
Reason #3: Reduce Anxiety

It is perfectly normal to feel anxious about an exam like the SAT or ACT. Your performance on the test will greatly affect your college choices/acceptance and play an essential role in your educational future. One way to reduce the anxiety surrounding the exam is to be as prepared as possible and reduce the element of surprise when it comes to:

  1. Content
  2. Question Type/Style
  3. Test format
  4. Time restrictions.

Over the summer, you can take the time to familiarize yourself with the content, build on topics and materials you already know, get clarification on topics that you find confusing, and get familiar with the types of questions on the exam. Basically, you have the time to work towards creating a testing environment where you are calm and confident.

Reason #4: Great time to hire a tutor to help

If you find that studying for the SAT/ACT is overwhelming, you may want to get help and hire a tutor over the summer months. A tutoring service can provide a test prep program that is tailored to your specific learning style and individual needs. Often times, tutors become masters of the exam they teach and have a wealth of tricks and tips to “crack” the test. With this individualized study plan, you will become more comfortable for the exam and gain a better grasp of the content for success (and a better test score).
