I am an educator. By now we are all aware that some people have been accused of fraud, racketeering, and money laundering in return for their children’s college acceptances. The situation upsets me on several levels, but the core issue is the loss of opportunity for the students who do honest, hard work — and the pitiable loss of accomplishment for those who did (sometimes unknowingly) benefit from this scheme. For years, I’ve watched the students we tutor put in months of hard work, with tremendous grit and determination, to improve their test scores and reach for their dreams.

Proper test prep is the recipe for success.

The recipe for success on any test is not: 1) Study for 100 hours. 2) Take 20 practice tests 3) Take care of your mind, body, and soul. And then … 4) Pay someone to take the test for you.

Yes, serious study and practice takes a whole lot more effort than illegally cheating the system. But the reward is incomparable: acquiring the skills, confidence, and determination to achieve true and lasting success in your academic life and your future career.

Often in life, we are presented with opportunities to take an easier path to seemingly the same goal. Sometimes those easier paths are just wrong — cheating, for example. Or maybe it’s a bit of a grey area, like whether to pay the train fare when you know they probably won’t check the ticket. In either case, the real problem isn’t that you broke a law. It’s that you can’t be real — you force yourself to live a lie.

The kids who cheated will spend their whole college careers under the shadow of a lie.

They don’t really belong where they are. The students who did what it takes to get in fairly will get so much more out of college — and life.

Despite the appeal of taking the easy road, it doesn’t often lead to long-term success.

After all, if you’re not basing your success on your own hard work, then whatever comes from it will ultimately crumble.

Of course, the hard road is longer and requires more effort. But that effort will ultimately demonstrate to others and yourself what you are truly capable of.

It’s been said that the only person you’re in competition with is who you were yesterday. Do you want to be better, strive more, reach further than you ever have?
